Do you need scaffold designs
for your next project?

Scaffolding is a serious business. There is a lot of competition, quite a few risks and many laws and regulations to obey.

And everything must be ready by yesterday. You’ve plenty of things to worry about:

If that’s not enough, you also need to deal with scaffold designers to get drawings and calculations, as required by Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Did you erect an emergency scaffold last night
and need as-built drawings today?

You probably hired other designers in the past and were not happy with the experience. Did this happen to you?

If you are tired of that nonsense, you’ve arrived at the right place.

and quality that your clients will approve.

Hi! I am Raul Bandera, a Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng MICE) with 22 years of experience in scaffold design and temporary works.

After 5 years as Design Manager at PHD Access, I started UK Temporary Works Design to provide scaffold drawings and calculations with the speed and quality that you require.

I also managed my own engineering firm in Spain for 9 years, where we designed whatever the clients required: scaffolding, formwork, concrete structures…

During those years, I found the time to train scaffolders and patent a new anchor system. Unfortunately, once the construction crisis hit Spain, I had to dissolve the company and start from scratch in London.

What are the steps to get a design?

1. Design brief

You send an email to info@uktemporaryworks.com with the requirements (tube & fitting/system scaffold, configuration, load class, sheeting, etc.) and any information you may have: building drawings, sketches, photos…

If needed, I will carry out a site visit to discuss the requirements with you and the client and take measurements.

2. Quotation

I will send you a quote via email with a delivery date, an on-time delivery guarantee and the payment terms (30 days).
Once you approve it by replying to the email and I’ve received all the information required, I’ll start working on your scaffold drawings.

Note: we are very strict with delivery dates and expect the same accuracy from our clients with the payment terms. Please don’t accept our quote if you don’t pay your bills on time.

3. Drawing

I’ll start drafting the building layout or cleaning the drawings you provided (you don’t need to see where they will install the toilets).

Then I’ll create the plan views, giving clear and simple dimensions (no funny 1937 mm bay lengths) for the scaffolders and the client. The bay lengths will be as long as possible so you can reduce erection time and materials. I’ll show every ledger brace, sway brace and tie location.

Next, I’ll draw several sections (and elevations, if necessary), showing what the erected scaffold will look like, and providing the leg loads of the most loaded standards: this will avoid questions from your client’s temporary works team.

After, I will provide details, depending on the scaffold configuration: tie details, beam connections, fixing to steel, sole boards…

Finally, I’ll prepare the paper layout and put everything together, adding notes and warnings from the risk assessment.

While preparing the drawing, I will check the scaffolding structure to ensure that it is stable and that all single components (boards, standards, braces, couplers, etc.) have the capacity required to sustain the loads.

4. Issue for approval

Once the design is finished and checked, I’ll send it to you as a PDF file for comments. If needed, I will revise it and reissue it for approval.
Once you and your client approve it, I’ll prepare the supporting calculations and drawings for construction.

5. Calculations

I will prepare a calculations report to prove that the scaffold structure is stable against overturning and sliding for any load considered (wind, snow, impact, etc.) and their combinations.

The calcs will also check that every component (couplers, transoms, ledgers, etc.) is working below its allowable capacity.
The calcs also include the design risk assessment.

Standards considered: CDM 2015, BS EN 1991-1-3 (Snow), BS EN 1991-1-4 (Wind), BS EN 12811-1, BS 5975, TG20:21 (revision of TG20:13), SG4:15, Work at Height Regulations 2005.

6 . Issue for construction

After checking the drawings and calculations, I’ll send all documents to you as PDF files via email.
I’ll also attach the invoice, payable in 30 days (as indicated in the quotation).
